Collaborating with the Government to Protect Mangrove Forests, Yagasu Signs an MOU with the Forest Management Unit (KPH) II Pematang Siantar

Medan, January 2021. The presence of mangrove forests in coastal areas plays a pivotal role for nature and the Earth. Mangrove forests can function as a tool to decrease the amount of carbons in the environment, as the plant is capable of absorbing large amounts of carbon. Governments, local communities, and environmental organizations alike exert all efforts in the preservation of mangroves, as it can contribute a multitude of solutions for environmental problems.

Yayasan Gajah Sumatera (YAGASU) Aceh is one of the non-governmental organizations (NGO) that focuses on the planting and restoration of mangrove ecosystems, with the goal of creating environments that foster benefits for the local biodiversity, communities, and the climate. The organization also performs numerous studies designed to further protect the environment and develop local community programs in carrying out these activities.

On Friday, January 22 2021, the YAGASU team visited the office of the Forest Management Unit (Kesatuan Pengelolaan Hutan, KPH) II Pematang Siantar, for the signing of the MoU on Mangrove Protection and Restoration Program Development in the Pematang Siantar area, which was attended by Ms. Syofniar, M. MA as the Head of KPH II and Ms. Meilinda Suriani Harefa as the YAGASU Program Director. The proceedings were also witnessed by Mr. Tigor Siahaan, Ms. Melvi, and Anton Siregar as Restoration Manager and members of the staff from YAGASU.
