Planting Mangroves in Ponds with Silvofishery Concept, Yagasu Provides Milkfish Seeds to Langsa and Aceh Timur Villages

Medan, February 2021, Ponds are one of the most optimal planting mediums for mangroves. Mangroves are plants that can be found in coastal areas and provide a plethora of benefits for its ecosystem, such as being the nursery ground for marine life including fishes, shrimps, and crabs. One of the concepts utilized in the planting of mangroves is to combine it with aquaculture activities in a single pond. This practice is known as silvofishery or wanamina.

Silvofishery is one of the alternatives that can be used for the preservation of mangroves, and is one of the cultivation programs done in traditional ponds in order to preserve the mangrove’s ecosystem. Yagasu engages coastal communities, especially pond owners, in efforts to utilize silvofishery in their respective ponds, which makes use of mangroves—specifically the plants’ roots--as a nursery ground for the fishes. This is done in hopes that more aquaculture farmers will practice silvofishery and make their ponds more eco-friendly.

On Monday, January 25 2021, the Yagasu team engaged in an activity to provide milkfish seeds to aquaculture farmers in villages throughout Langsa and Aceh Timur. This activity is done to support the commitment of pond-owners that converted active ponds without mangroves by planting mangroves in their ponds using the silvofishery concept.

Meilinda Suriani Harefa, as the Program Director of Yagasu Aceh, stated that this activity is done as a form of the foundation’s dedication to ponds that utilize the concept of silvofishery. Yagasu will continue to provide milkfish seeds as a form of compensation to the farmers capable of protecting the mangrove ecosystem in their ponds satisfactorily.
