Mangrove Planting Event with the North Sumatra Branch of the Ministry of Finance and YAGASU in Rugemuk Village, Pantai Labu, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra
Deli Serdang, North Sumatra – The Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, represented by the North Sumatra Ministry of Finance, and the Sumatran Elephant Foundation (YAGASU), came together today to organize a mangrove planting event as part of efforts to preserve the environment and mitigate climate change. This event took place on Saturday, October 21, 2023, in Rugemuk Village, Pantai Labu Subdistrict, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra.
The mangrove planting activity represents a concrete step in supporting the government’s efforts to conserve coastal ecosystems, which serve as vital habitats for a variety of flora and fauna and act as a natural defense against climate change impacts.
Officials from the North Sumatra Ministry of Finance were present at the event, demonstrating strong government support in addressing environmental and climate change issues. These officials delivered speeches highlighting the importance of the involvement of all stakeholders in preserving the environment and reducing the impacts of climate change.
In addition to the Ministry of Finance officials, the presence of Dr. Meilinda Suriani Harefa, Program Director of YAGASU, was a highlight of the event. Dr. Meilinda is a key figure in the efforts to preserve mangroves and coastal ecosystems in North Sumatra. She provided insights into the importance of mangrove ecosystems in maintaining ecological balance.
During the mangrove planting activity, a total of 500 Rhizophora mangrove seedlings were simultaneously planted by the participants. Rhizophora was chosen for its strong roots, which effectively combat coastal erosion and provide protection for fish and other marine life.
Mangrove planting represents a concrete step in efforts to preserve the environment and reduce the impacts of climate change. Additionally, this activity provides an opportunity for local communities to actively participate in the safeguarding of their coastal ecosystems, which serve as their source of livelihood.
The Ministry of Finance and YAGASU hope that this event can serve as an inspiring example for other regions across Indonesia to join in preserving the environment and climate for a better future. The current mangrove planting marks a significant first step in the long journey to protect our planet from the increasingly evident impacts of climate change.
