MOU SIGNING WITH WEST JAVA PROVINCIAL FORESTRY SERVICE

Yagasu – Yagasu conducted mangrove tree planting activity inviting teachers and students of SMP (Junior High School) 32 PGRI Pulau Kampai in coastal area of Pulau Kampai Village, Langkat, North Sumatra on Friday, 19 November 2021

The MoU was signed directly by the CEO of Yagasu, Mr. Bambang Suprayogi, and the Head of West Java Provincial Forestry Service, Mr. Epi Kustiawan.

This MOU contains agreements related to the development of climate disaster resilient villages in West Java. Yagasu and West Java Provincial Forestry Service are in to develop climate-disaster resilient villages in West Java.

This program will also implement a sustainable green economy program and directly involve community groups, both women and millennial farmers/fishers.

The event was attended by 8 Yagasu team members and 30 delegates from relevant government agencies at Taman Hutan Raya (Forest Park) Ir. H. Djuanda.

Based on the discussion during the meeting, it was decided that a follow-up meeting would be held between Yagasu staffs and the branch offices of the forestry service in West Java.

AGROFORESTRY PROGRAM LAUNCHING AND SOCIALIZATION IN WEST JAVA

Yagasu - Yagasu And Pur Project Held Agroforestry in Citarum Watershed, West Java Program Launching Socialization on Saturday, 13 November 2021.

The agroforestry program socialization was opened by the Headman of Margamulya Village, Mr. Suhendra Rohmani, followed by Mrs. Meilinda Suriani Harefa (Program Director of Yagasu), the representative of Ministry of Village, Development of Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration, Mr. Sumarlan (Director of Harmonization of Utilization of Natural Resources and the Environment) and Mr. Heldo Marta (Coordinator of Harmonizing Environmental Management), Head of Watershed Management at the West Java Provincial Forestry Service, Mr. Adji Sumarwan, PUR Project representative, Mr. Arif Kurniawan (Country Manager of PUR Projet Indonesia), Mrs. Melati Samata Aji (Bandung Agroforestry Program Coordinator), Members of Margamulya Farmer Group, and Members pf Bojongmulyasari Farmer Group.

Agroforestry is a farming system that combines agricultural and forestry crops to increase profits and provide added value. In one forest area, there are trees, both homogeneous and heterogeneous, combined with one or more types of agricultural crops. This technique aims to create an ecologically, socially and economically sustainable ecosystem.

Agroforestry helps optimally use land so that it can improve the needs of people’s lives. It also helps to increase the carrying capacity of human ecology especially in rural areas. Therefore, agroforestry can also be used to guarantee and improve food needs and raise people’s living standards.

In this socialization, each party hopes that this Agroforestry program will manage to provide benefits to the environment in the form of carbon sequestration, regulate terrestrial land water systems and oxygen supply, and provide additional economic advantages to farmers through agricultural products. This socialization was closed with the handing over of plant seeds from PUR Projet to Mrs. Meilinda Suriani Harefa as Program Director of Yagasu, then from Yagasu to Farmer Groups of Margamulya Village and Bojongmulyasari Village as a symbolic launch of the Yagasu Agroforestry program in West Java.

RESEARCH ON CARBON STOCKS IN MANGROVE FOREST BY YAGASU: A GLOBAL CLIMATE MITIGATION

Yagasu – Research and Monitoring Division of Yayasan Gajah Sumatra (Yagasu) conducted research on carbon stocks in mangrove forests in 4 villages in Langkat Regency, North Sumatra in September and October 2021.

Research on carbon stocks as described by Yagasu’s Research and Monitoring Manager, Grace Yanti Panjaitan, is one of regular work programs of the research and monitoring division. Grace explained that carbon stock is the average value of carbon stored in plant bodies and soil which generally uses units of tonC per Ha. The stored carbon stock is determined by several factors, including trunk circumference (diameter), height, species density, soil type and tree age. “The more carbon stored in a tree, the better the air quality in the environment, and it can cope with global climate change,” she said.

This research involved Yagasu’s monitoring staffs, village officials, students, local communities, Langkat Forestry Service and international researchers. This project was carried out in 4 villages spread across Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, including: in Pulau Kampai Village as many as 55 plots out of 1,035, 76 Ha, in Pangkalan Siata Village with 36 plots out of 876, 88 Ha, and in Halaban with 12 plots and in Salahaji Village with 15 plots out of 252, 51 Ha.

In regard to the selected research location, Yagasu proposed that these 4 villages have preserved mangrove forests, various species of mangroves, and varying levels of density, either high, medium, or low. Therefore, this area can represent the existing mangrove forest and is suitable as an object of research.

The output of the research is to get the value of biomass and carbon stocks that obtained from the field measurement, then will be proceeded to be color gradient, graphic and table data sets that can be used to analyze the carbon stock from satellite image with machine learning non-linear method.

“We hope that through this research which is funded by the Global Mangrove Trust (GMT) and KUMI, we can provide scientific information about the spatial distribution of carbon values in each mangrove forest. The data is useful as a reference for development of environmental policy to mitigate the global climate change,” she added. She also stated that the wider the mangrove forest that is maintained, the greater its ability to absorb carbon.
