Mangrove planting commemorates World Mangrove Day

Thursday, July 27 2023, Yagasu (Yayasan Gajah Sumatera), supported by VNV Advisory, planted mangroves with the government and the community in Paluh Sibaji Village, Pantai Labu District, Deli Serdang Regency. The event which was attended by the community and government agencies is a concrete step in efforts to restore coastal ecosystems and increase synergy with various parties, including the government and the community.

With the theme “Indonesia Net Zero Carbon 2060”, this mangrove planting event aims to raise awareness of the importance of mangroves in protecting land from abrasion and also as an effort to absorb CO2 and mitigate climate change and global warming.

The village Head of Paluh Sibaji Village, Nasril, expressed his appreciation to the Yayasan Gajah Suamtera (Yagasu) for re-selecting their village as a location for planting mangroves. He also invited all village communities to work together to preserve the mangroves in their area in order to protect the village from the dangers of coastal abrasion.

Yagasu Restoration Manager, Anton Siregar, also expressed his gratitude for the support from the government and the people of Paluh Sibaji in this mangrove planting event. “Mangrove ecosystems have an important role in maintaining environmental sustainability, especially increasing the biodiversity of coastal ecosystems. Yagasu is also committed to supporting mangrove restoration in the Paluh Sibaji Village area, including addressing the degradation of existing mangroves.”

The Head of the North Sumatra Province marine, coastal and small islands Division, M. Riza Kurnia Lubis, S.Pi, M.Sc expressed his support for this mangrove planting activity. “Restoring coastal ecosystems is not a solitary task, but a shared responsibility to protect coastlines that are increasingly under threat.”

Kristo Damanik, representative of the Wampu Sei Ular Watershed Management Agency, also expressed his appreciation for this activity. “BPDAS Wampu Sei Ular is ready to help and provide mangrove seed assistance for people who want to participate in coastal ecosystem restoration.”

This event also involved a discussion session between the community and related parties, where the community enthusiastically asked questions and gave their opinions about efforts to restore the mangrove ecosystem in Paluh Sibaji Village.

With the spirit of togetherness, it is hoped that this joint mangrove planting event will be the first step that inspires more people to participate in efforts to preserve and restore coastal ecosystems for a better environment.

Yagasu Planted 25.000 Mangrove Trees With Community In Aceh Jaya

Aceh Jaya – Yagasu (Yayasan Gajah Sumatra) and community planted 25,000 mangrove trees in Lhok Timon Village, Setia Bakti Sub-district, Aceh Jaya Regency (Wednesday, 25/5/2022).

This planting activity was attended by Yagasu’s Program Director and staff members, as well as the Government including Assistant II of Aceh Jaya Regional Secretariat, DLHK (Department of Environment and Fisheries) of Aceh Province, UPTD KPH (Forest Management Unit) Region I Aceh, BKSDA (Center for Conservation of Natural Resources) Aceh, DKP (Department of Marine and Fisheries) Aceh Jaya, Representatives of Kodim (Military Recruiting Office) 0114/Aceh Jaya, The Setia Bakti Subdistrict Head, PMI Aceh Jaya, Kapolsek (The Police Chief) of Setia Bakti Sub-district, and local village heads.

The mangrove planting, as explained by the Program Director of Yagasu, Meilinda Suriani Harefa, aims to increase the environmental capacity of mangrove ecosystem for climate change mitigation and adaptation, natural disaster risk reduction, biodiversity conservation and coastal communities empowerment.

“Currently, Yagasu team and the community have planted 25.000 mangrove trees Rhizophora Mucronata and Rhizophora Stylosa species in an area of 10 hectares,” explained Meilinda when interviewed by reporters after the ceremonial event.

Meilinda also explained that since 2001, Yagasu has been consistently working on conservation in the east coast of Aceh.

“Yagasu is open for collaboration with the local government to preserve the environment through mangrove planting,” she added.

She explained that in Aceh Jaya, mangrove planting had begun in August 2001 with an area of 420 hectares prepared.

Then, seeing the enthusiasm of the community to participate in training on restoration activities, Yagasu added more areas of land for planting mangrove trees.

Meanwhile, Assistant II of the Aceh Jaya Regional Secretariat, Rahmat Oriza, appreciated the Aceh Jaya District Government for the implementation of the mangrove planting program in Aceh Jaya, which was conducted by Yagasu.

“Hopefully this program can raise people’s awareness for protecting the environment and and mangrove forests, as well as being one of the government’s strategies in improving and recovering the economy of the local community who live in coastal areas,” he said.

He also hopes that this kind of activities can be carried out continuously in the context of developing and preserving mangrove areas in the West coast of Aceh province.

According to Rahmad, mangroves have enormous benefits, because apart from preventing abrasion, mangrove forests are also a shelter for ecosystem habitats such as fish and crabs.

He also explained that mangrove forests can create new job opportunities for the surrounding community, so that the wheels of the economy can continue to spin and the welfare of the community can be improved.

“Don’t let mangrove forest be destroyed, cut down or converted into a pond or plantation area,” he concluded.

Yagasu – Celebrating One Million Tree Movement Day: Yagasu and The Reiz Artotel Curated Planted 200 Mangrove Trees on Monday and Tuesday, 10 and 11 January 20222 in Sei Nagalawan Village, Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra.

This Mangrove tree planting activity was conducted in commemoration of the one million tree movement day.

Before planting Mangrove trees, Yagasu gave the staffs of The Reiz Suites Artotel Curated some explanation about Mangrove ecosystem, Mangrove species, and their benefits.

Celebrating The World Tree Day, Yagasu Conducted Mangrove Tree Planting Activity

Yagasu – Yagasu conducted mangrove tree planting activity inviting teachers and students of SMP (Junior High School) 32 PGRI Pulau Kampai in coastal area of Pulau Kampai Village, Langkat, North Sumatra on Friday, 19 November 2021

The mangrove tree planting activity, as described by Yagasu’s Social and Business Manager, Jodi Akbar, is one of regular work programs of the social and business division named Awareness Activity. Jodi explained that this program aims to introduce school students to mangrove ecosystem and teach them environmental awanerss so that they can understand the value of environmental sustainability from an early age. He also explained that in connection with the commemoration of the world tree day, this was the right moment to organize this program.

Before planting, Yagasu team presented Mangroves and their ecosystems and the benefits of Mangroves for the environment to the students. In addition, the students were also invited to play fun games to increase cohesiveness and practice their cooperation. “These games also aim to make students more cohesive and practice communication between them.” Jodi explained.

This activity involved 7 Yagasu team members, 5 teachers, and 27 students of SMP 32 PGRI Pulau Kampai. After the presentation and game session in class, the planting process begins. In this session, participants will be grouped to take turns planting according to the instructions of the instructor. After the planting process completed, all students are welcome to clean up and take a break. The event was closed by giving prizes to the quiz winners, exchanging souvenirs, and taking a picture for documentation.

Agroforestry Program Launching And Socialization In West Java

Yagasu - Yagasu And Pur Project Held Agroforestry in Citarum Watershed, West Java Program Launching Socialization on Saturday, 13 November 2021.

The agroforestry program socialization was opened by the Headman of Margamulya Village, Mr. Suhendra Rohmani, followed by Mrs. Meilinda Suriani Harefa (Program Director of Yagasu), the representative of Ministry of Village, Development of Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration, Mr. Sumarlan (Director of Harmonization of Utilization of Natural Resources and the Environment) and Mr. Heldo Marta (Coordinator of Harmonizing Environmental Management), Head of Watershed Management at the West Java Provincial Forestry Service, Mr. Adji Sumarwan, PUR Project representative, Mr. Arif Kurniawan (Country Manager of PUR Projet Indonesia), Mrs. Melati Samata Aji (Bandung Agroforestry Program Coordinator), Members of Margamulya Farmer Group, and Members pf Bojongmulyasari Farmer Group.

Agroforestry is a farming system that combines agricultural and forestry crops to increase profits and provide added value. In one forest area, there are trees, both homogeneous and heterogeneous, combined with one or more types of agricultural crops. This technique aims to create an ecologically, socially and economically sustainable ecosystem.

Agroforestry helps optimally use land so that it can improve the needs of people’s lives. It also helps to increase the carrying capacity of human ecology especially in rural areas. Therefore, agroforestry can also be used to guarantee and improve food needs and raise people’s living standards.

In this socialization, each party hopes that this Agroforestry program will manage to provide benefits to the environment in the form of carbon sequestration, regulate terrestrial land water systems and oxygen supply, and provide additional economic advantages to farmers through agricultural products. This socialization was closed with the handing over of plant seeds from PUR Projet to Mrs. Meilinda Suriani Harefa as Program Director of Yagasu, then from Yagasu to Farmer Groups of Margamulya Village and Bojongmulyasari Village as a symbolic launch of the Yagasu Agroforestry program in West Java.

Planting Trees with BNI

“One Tree One Employee”.

On Friday, June 25, 2021, Yagasu and BNI (Bank Negara Indonesia) held a planting event of 400 tree seedlings, the seeds planted were duku, rambutan, mango, and longan. This planting activity was carried out to celebrate BNI’s 75th anniversary.

As for this 75th anniversary, BNI carries the theme of one tree one employee, this activity also involves the local community (Neighborhood IX Mencharim, East Binjai District), government officials, and Babinsa.

Yagasu as an NGO concerned with the environment really appreciates this activity. We hope that the tree seedlings planted can thrive and have a good effect on our environment.

Yagasu Conducts the Planting of Mangroves and the Spreading of Vaname Shrimp Seeds

Alongside the KKP Secretary General, Yagasu Conducts the Planting of Mangroves and The Spreading of Vaname Shrimp Seeds for First Time in The East Aceh National Shrimp Farm Cluster Model

Medan, Februari 2021, East Aceh is well-known for the potential of its nature, especially in the marine and fisheries sector, due to its direct proximity to the Malacca Strait. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan, KKP) built national shrimp farm cluster models in East Aceh with consideration to the unpolluted land, a condition that makes it ideal for the development of shrimp fisheries. Adequate facilities and infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and irrigation channel further solidified the decision to construct the national shrimp farm cluster model in Aceh Timur.

Monday, December 28, 2021 Yagasu, in an event attended directly by Program Director Meilinda Suriani Harefa, alongside the Secretary General (Sekjen) of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and Commissioner General (Komjen) Mr. Antam Novambar and their entourage spread Vaname Perdana shrimp seeds and planted mangroves in the national shrimp ponds Cluster Model in East Aceh, to the tune of 1.5 hectares of mangroves being planted in the East Aceh national shrimp farm cluster. Rayeuk, East Idi district. Also attending were the Regent of East Aceh and the Chairperson of the East Aceh DPRD, the heads of the Host Government Offices in East Aceh and the Head of the Brackish Water Cultivation Fishery Center Ujung Batee M. Tahang and staff who served as committee in the implementation of this activity.

Anton Syahputra Siregar, the Yagasu Manager of Restoration, said that planting mangroves in national shrimp farm clusters is done with the aim of developing Silvofishery ponds as an alternative to maintaining mangrove forests. Mangrove plants possess root systems that protrudes from the ground, a system called breathing roots which are good for binding mud and neutralizing chemicals so that food waste from cluster ponds can be fed to the silvofishery pond. This means that the mangroves growing inside the silvofishery ponds can serve as a good filtration system for the fisheries.

Anton further explained that the mangrove ecosystem also plays an integral part in the carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles. Mangroves are also able to prevent coastal abrasion, especially when the farm cluster is positioned so closely to the beach. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), through the Directorate General of aquaculture, developed a shrimp farm cluster model in Gampong Matang Rayeuk, East Aceh regency. The model spans 5,1 hectares and will be equipped with facilities such as tendon basins, raw water distribution tanks, maintenance plots, disposal and harvesting channels, as well as a Wastewater Management Installation (Instalasi Pengelolaan Air Limbah, IPAL). It is a huge honor for Yagasu to be able to participate in this activity.
