Reviewing Mangrove Projects in West Sumatra
West Sumatra (June 2024)—Yayasan Gajah Sumatera (Yagasu) is proud to welcome VNV Advisory to one of the mangrove restoration project locations in West Sumatra. This visit is part of a collaborative effort to uphold the conservation of the mangrove ecosystem in partnership with the local community.
The mangrove restoration project run by Yagasu with the support of VNV aims to improve environmental conditions and positively impact the ecological, social, and economic sustainability of communities around the coastal area. Mangroves serve a crucial role in mitigating the impact of natural disasters, including floods and erosion, and provide a habitat for diverse marine and terrestrial species.
During the visit, the team from VNV Advisory observed various aspects of project implementation, including methods for planting mangroves, programs for empowering the community, and activities for environmental education targeting the younger generation in the vicinity. The community is the key to the success of this program because it is the main driver in maintaining the sustainability of mangroves, which will have a long-term impact on their lives.
The ongoing mangrove restoration program is expected to restore optimal ecosystem function, reduce carbon emissions, and improve community livelihoods by developing sustainable local resources. The collaboration between Yagasu, VNV, and the local community is a concrete step in supporting the global target of maintaining environmental sustainability and increasing resilience to climate change. Yagasu is hopeful that, with the support of partners like VNV, this restoration initiative will continue to expand, benefiting coastal communities and the environment by reducing carbon emissions.
