YAGASU AND PLN PEDULI INAUGURATED RUMAH BACA (READING HOUSE) MERAH PUTIH IN DANAU SIOMBAK , NORTH SUMATRA

Medan – Yagasu team and PLN Peduli launched Merah Putih Reading House in Danau Siombak, Medan Marelan Sub-distrtict, Medan on Friday, 24 June 2022.

The Yagasu Team with PLN Peduli inaugurated the Rumah Baca (reading house) Merah Putih in Siombak Lake, Paya Pasir Village, Medan Marelan District, Medan City. The inauguration of the reading house was attended by the Program Director of Yagasu, Melinda Suriani Harefa, Manager of the Paya Pasir Gas Power Center (ULPLTG) Service Unit, Hendri Prianto, as well as Territorial Defense management Officer, People’s Security and Order Supervising Officer, school children, and local communities who were participants in the mangrove batik training.

Previously, the Yagasu team with PLN (State Electricity Company) Belawan Generation Control Implementation Unit (UPDK), through the Environmental Social Responsibility (TJSL) program first renovated a reading house that had existed since 2019.

Furthermore, the Yagasu team, supported by PLN Peduli, also provided training on making eco-print Batik masks for children in the area around Siombak Lake.

Meilinda, the Program Director of  Yagasu, expressed her gratitude to PLN UPDK (Generation Control Implementing Unit) Belawan for rehabilitating the reading house and building a public bathroom in it.

“This help is very useful for Rumah Baca Merah Putih which is chaired by the North Sumatran mangrove activist, Wibi Nugraha.” She said.

She also asked for the commitment of the reading house community group members because without their commitment to helping, the TJSL provided by PLN UPDK Belawan would not be implemented properly.

Harmanto, Manager of PLN UPDK Belawan Harmanto through the Manager of the Paya Pasir ULPLTG (Gas Power Electricity Center Service Unit), Hendri Prianto, hopes that the rehabilitation of this reading house can provide comfort for children who study in Rumah Baca Merah Putih

YAGASU will provide regular sewing training at Rumah Baca Merah Putih for local women who live around Siombak Lake. The training will not be limited to face mask production but also on wallets and negligees production.

YAGASU PLANTED 25.000 MANGROVE TREES WITH COMMUNITY IN ACEH JAYA

Aceh Jaya – Yagasu (Yayasan Gajah Sumatra) and community planted 25,000 mangrove trees in Lhok Timon Village, Setia Bakti Sub-district, Aceh Jaya Regency (Wednesday, 25/5/2022).

This planting activity was attended by  Yagasu’s Program Director and staff members, as well as the Government including Assistant II of Aceh Jaya Regional Secretariat, DLHK (Department of Environment and Fisheries) of Aceh Province, UPTD KPH (Forest Management Unit) Region I Aceh, BKSDA (Center for Conservation of Natural Resources) Aceh, DKP (Department of Marine and Fisheries) Aceh Jaya, Representatives of Kodim (Military Recruiting Office) 0114/Aceh Jaya, The Setia Bakti Subdistrict Head, PMI Aceh Jaya, Kapolsek (The Police Chief) of Setia Bakti Sub-district, and local village heads.

The mangrove planting, as explained by the Program Director of Yagasu, Meilinda Suriani Harefa, aims to increase the environmental capacity of mangrove ecosystem for climate change mitigation and adaptation, natural disaster risk reduction, biodiversity conservation and coastal communities empowerment.

“Currently, Yagasu team and the community have planted 25.000 mangrove trees Rhizophora Mucronata and Rhizophora Stylosa species in an area of ​​10 hectares,” explained Meilinda when interviewed by reporters after the ceremonial event.

Meilinda also explained that since 2001, Yagasu has been consistently working on conservation in the east coast of Aceh.

“Yagasu is open for collaboration with the local government to preserve the environment through mangrove planting,” she added.

She explained that in Aceh Jaya, mangrove planting had begun in August 2001 with an area of ​​420 hectares prepared.

Then, seeing the enthusiasm of the community to participate in training on restoration activities, Yagasu added more areas of land for planting mangrove trees.

Meanwhile, Assistant II of the Aceh Jaya Regional Secretariat, Rahmat Oriza, appreciated the Aceh Jaya District Government for the implementation of the mangrove planting program in Aceh Jaya, which was conducted by Yagasu.

“Hopefully this program can raise people’s awareness for protecting the environment and and mangrove forests, as well as being one of the government’s strategies in improving and recovering the economy of the local community who live in coastal areas,” he said.

He also hopes that this kind of activities can be carried out continuously in the context of developing and preserving mangrove areas in the West coast of Aceh province.

According to Rahmad, mangroves have enormous benefits, because apart from preventing abrasion, mangrove forests are also a shelter for ecosystem habitats such as fish and crabs.

He also explained that mangrove forests can create new job opportunities for the surrounding community, so that the wheels of the economy can continue to spin and the welfare of the community can be improved.

“Don’t let mangrove forest be destroyed, cut down or converted into a pond or plantation area,” he concluded.

SHARING THE BLESSINGS OF RAMADHAN, YAGASU DISTRIBUTES SEMBAKO (STAPLE FOOD) TO COMMUNITY

Medan –Yagasu distributed one hundred sembako (staple food) packages to community who live around Yagasu's head office in Medan, North Sumatra (27/04).

The representative of Yagasu staff said the food aid was a form of Yagasu’s concern for the community around Yagasu’s head office on Jl. Sei Batu Gingging, Medan Selayang.

The Ramadan packages were given to the poor, the elderly, workers and the community who live around the office.

This food aid is a form of Yagasu’s concern for the community who live around Yagasu’s office to help the community ahead of Eid Al-Fitr 1443 H.

Yagasu hoped that the packages would be useful in helping the community meet their daily needs, in preparation to the Eid Al-Fitr.

VILLAGE REGULATION SIGNING – LHOK TIMON VILLAGE, ACEH

Aceh Barat – Yagasu and the Head of Lhok Timon Village signed a village regulation and spatial map on Wednesday, March 30th 2022.

The signing of this regulation was attended by Yagasu’s Program Director, Meilinda Suriani Harefa, Keuchik (The Head) and Tuha Peut (Village Deliberation Agency) of Lhok Timon Village.

The main objective of the village regulation is to protect the mangrove forest in Lhok Timon Village.

The process started from mapping the mangrove area, socializing and consolidating with all authorities, drafting a village regulation, to signing a village regulation.

This village regulation also aims to accelerate the realization of community welfare through improvement, service, empowerment, and community participation, as well as increasing regional competitiveness by taking into account the principles of democracy, equity, justice, privilege and specificity of a region.

At this meeting, all participants agreed and signed the regulation that had been drawed up together.

“We hope that the signing of the Village Regulation for the Protection of Mangrove Forests in Lhok Timon Village will make the village community more concerned in protecting Mangrove Forest in Lhok Timon Village”, Meilinda Suriani Harefa explained.

SILVOFISHERY HARVEST MONITORING IN PALUH KURAU VILLAGE, NORTH SUMATRA

Yagasu – Social and Business Division of Yayasan Gajah Sumatra (Yagasu) monitored silvofishery harvest of fostered silvofishery ponds in Paluh Kurau Village, Deli Serdang District, North Sumatra On Tuesday, 22 March 2022.

Yagasu’s Social and Business Manager, Jodi Akbar, explained that this monitoring activity aims to assess the success rate of silvofishery ponds as the basis of program evaluation and strategic planning.

Silvofishery is an aquaculture system that combines fishery business with mangrove planting, which can increase pond productivity without damaging mangrove ecosystem. This system can save mangrove forests as well as enhance the welfare of local people living in coastal areas.

In 22 March 2022, Yagasu team monitored one of silvofishery ponds managed by community group in Paluh Kurau Village, Deli Serdang District, North Sumatra which has been supported by funding for economic development for silvofishery pond model from Yagasu.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS IN THREE SCHOOLS IN ACEH PROVINCE

Yagasu – Yagasu conducted mangrove tree planting activity inviting teachers and students of SMP (Junior High School) 12 Banda Aceh, SD Negeri (State Elementary School) Lampage, and SD Negeri (State Elementary School) 16 Jaya in Aceh Jaya on Tuesday - Wednesday, 8-9 March 2022.

The Mangrove tree planting activity, as described by Yagasu’s Social and Business Manager, Jodi Akbar, is one of regular work programs of the Social and Business division named Awareness Activity. Jodi explained that this program aims to introduce school students to mangrove ecosystem and teach them environmental awareness so that they can understand the value of environmental sustainability from an early age.

Before planting, Yagasu team presented Mangroves and their ecosystems and the benefits of Mangroves for the environment to the students. In addition, the students were also invited to play fun games to increase cohesiveness and practice their cooperation. “These games also aim to make students more cohesive and practice communication between them.” Jodi explained.

This activity involved: 6 Yagasu team members; 3 teachers and 30 students of SMP (Junior High School) 12 Banda Aceh; 3 teachers and 33 students of SD Negeri (State Elementary School) Lampage; and 6 teachers, a head master and 23 students of SD Negeri (State Elementary School) 16 Jaya.

After the presentation and game session in class, the planting process began. In this session, participants were grouped to take turns for planting according to the instructions of the instructor.

After the planting process completed, all students were asked to clean up and take a break. The event was closed by giving prizes to the quiz winners and taking a picture for documentation.

OYSTER AND MANGROVE-BASED FOODS PRODUCTS PROCESSING TRAINING IN GAMPONG TIBANG, BANDA ACEH

Yagasu – Yagasu provided training on oyster and mangrove-based food products processing for women in coastal communities in Gampong Tibang, Banda Aceh, on 7 March 2022.

Yagasu’s Social and Business Manager, Jodi Akbar, explained that this program aims to facilitate women in coastal areas in Gampong Tibang training on oyster and mangrove-based foods products processing.

This activity is also one of the of Yagasu’s main vision which is maintaining the sustainability of the mangrove ecosystem by providing new economic resources for coastal communities. By utilizing mangrove resources, coastal communities can improve their entrepreneurial skills.

This program involved 6 Yagasu team members, and 20 women of Gampong Tibang coastal communities.

The training was divided into several sessions. The first session was training on processing oyster into meatball, followed by training on processing Prepat fruit into syrup. The last one is training on processing the Prepat fruit into candy and jam.

The participants were very enthusiastic about this activity, because they had just learned that mangrove fruit (Berembang) could be processed into food (jam, syrup, candy).

The participants were given a chance to practice what the trainers had exemplified. Yagasu hopes that after this training they can start a business utilizing mangrove sources and become a new source of income for them.

CIRCULAR BIOECONOMY ALLIANCE (CBA) MEMBER’S MEETING IN DUMFRIES HOUSE, SCOTLAND

Yagasu – Yagasu’s Program Director, Meilinda Suriani Harefa, attended Circular Bioeconomy Alliance (CBA) Member’s Meeting in Dumfries House, Scotland on 28 January 2022.

Circular Bioeconomy Alliance (CBA) was established by His Royal Highness Prince of Wales in 2020, consisting of inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations, companies, and investors who provide expertise and implement projects in areas related to the circular bioeconomy.

CBA, led by Marc Palahi, aims to accelerate the transition to a circular bioeconomy that is climate neutral, inclusive and prospers in harmony with nature by providing sustainable prosperity through the use of ecosystems and sustainable management of biological resources.

It is an honour for Yagasu to take part in CBA along with other 38 Living Labs implementers and donors spread across the world including Reforest’Action, AstraZeneca, World Economic Forum (WEF), and Nature-based Solution Initiative University of Oxford’s.

On January 28th 2022, CBA successfully held its first member’s meeting in Dumfries House, Scotland which was attended by all members and an invited observer, Richard Dunne. Yagasu’s Program Director, Meilinda Suriani Harefa, also participated in this meeting.

CELEBRATING ONE MILLION TREE MOVEMENT DAY: YAGASU AND THE REIZ ARTOTEL CURATED PLANTED 200 MANGROVE TREES

Yagasu – Celebrating One Million Tree Movement Day: Yagasu and The Reiz Artotel Curated Planted 200 Mangrove Trees on Monday and Tuesday, 10 and 11 January 20222 in Sei Nagalawan Village, Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra.

This Mangrove tree planting activity was conducted in commemoration of the one million tree movement day.

Before planting Mangrove trees, Yagasu gave the staffs of The Reiz Suites Artotel Curated some explanation about Mangrove ecosystem, Mangrove species, and their benefits.

This planting was in the context of the inauguration of the ecological-based vaname shrimp cultivation pilot cluster in the Aceh Tamiang region.

The inauguration was attended by the General Director of Aquaculture, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, TB Haeru Rahayu, The egent of Aceh Tamiang Regency, Mursil, Representative of the Center for Brackish Water Cultivation Fisheries (BPBAP), and Yagasu’s Mangrove Restoration Manager, Anton Siregar.
