SILVOFISHERY HARVEST MONITORING IN PALUH KURAU VILLAGE, NORTH SUMATRA

Yagasu – Social and Business Division of Yayasan Gajah Sumatra (Yagasu) monitored silvofishery harvest of fostered silvofishery ponds in Paluh Kurau Village, Deli Serdang District, North Sumatra On Tuesday, 22 March 2022.

Yagasu’s Social and Business Manager, Jodi Akbar, explained that this monitoring activity aims to assess the success rate of silvofishery ponds as the basis of program evaluation and strategic planning.

Silvofishery is an aquaculture system that combines fishery business with mangrove planting, which can increase pond productivity without damaging mangrove ecosystem. This system can save mangrove forests as well as enhance the welfare of local people living in coastal areas.

In 22 March 2022, Yagasu team monitored one of silvofishery ponds managed by community group in Paluh Kurau Village, Deli Serdang District, North Sumatra which has been supported by funding for economic development for silvofishery pond model from Yagasu.

OYSTER AND MANGROVE-BASED FOODS PRODUCTS PROCESSING TRAINING IN GAMPONG TIBANG, BANDA ACEH

Yagasu – Yagasu provided training on oyster and mangrove-based food products processing for women in coastal communities in Gampong Tibang, Banda Aceh, on 7 March 2022.

Yagasu’s Social and Business Manager, Jodi Akbar, explained that this program aims to facilitate women in coastal areas in Gampong Tibang training on oyster and mangrove-based foods products processing.

This activity is also one of the of Yagasu’s main vision which is maintaining the sustainability of the mangrove ecosystem by providing new economic resources for coastal communities. By utilizing mangrove resources, coastal communities can improve their entrepreneurial skills.

This program involved 6 Yagasu team members, and 20 women of Gampong Tibang coastal communities.

The training was divided into several sessions. The first session was training on processing oyster into meatball, followed by training on processing Prepat fruit into syrup. The last one is training on processing the Prepat fruit into candy and jam.

The participants were very enthusiastic about this activity, because they had just learned that mangrove fruit (Berembang) could be processed into food (jam, syrup, candy).

The participants were given a chance to practice what the trainers had exemplified. Yagasu hopes that after this training they can start a business utilizing mangrove sources and become a new source of income for them.

TRAINING ON MANGROVE- BASED FOODS AND BATIK BY YAGASU: EMPOWERING WOMEN IN COASTAL COMMUNITIES IN SITUBONDO, EAST JAVA

Yagasu – Yagasu provided training on mangrove-based food products and batik processing for women in coastal communities in Situbondo, East Java on Thursday, 10 December 2021.

The training was attended by women and young women of Situbondo, East Java. This activity aims to help the women of Situbondo be able to process Mangrove plants into Batik crafts and food products.

It is expected that the women of Situbondo could produce handicrafts and foods from materials and ingredients found in Mangrove forest.

TRAINING ON MANGROVE-BASED FOODS PROCESSING BY YAGASU: EMPOWERING WOMEN IN COASTAL COMMUNITIES

Yagasu – Yagasu provided training on mangrove-based food products processing for women in coastal communities in Pulau Kampai Village, Pangkalan Susu, Langkat, North Sumatra in Thursday, 18 November 2021.

Yagasu’s Social and Business Manager, Jodi Akbar, explained that this program aims to facilitate women in coastal areas in Pulau Kampai Village training on mangrove-based food processing. The program included mangrove-based foods processing into syrup, candy, jam and chips.

This activity is also one of the focuses of Yagasu’s main vision which is maintaining the sustainability of the mangrove ecosystem by providing new economic resources for coastal communities. By utilizing mangrove resources, coastal communities can improve their entrepreneurial skills.

This program involved 7 Yagasu team members, 12 village officials, and 21 women of Pulau Kampai coastal communities. The event started with a speech by the Head of Pulau Kampai Village. He welcomed the arrival of Yagasu team and appreciated this program because it would be very beneficial for the women of Pulau Kampai village.

The training was divided into several sessions. The first session was training on processing Prepat fruit into syrup, followed by processing the Prepat fruit into candy and jam. The last one is training on processing Jeruju leaves into chips.

Green Growth Development

Economic support through the provision of milkfish, shrimp, and crab seedlings is given to active community groups implementing mangrove land restoration and those implementing aquaculture business using the silvofishery model in Paluh Kurau Village, Deli Serdang Regency.

The provision of these seeds is an implementation of a sustainable aquaculture model in the mangrove ecosystem so that groups can improve the economy through the conservative use of mangrove forests. Green growth as carried out by the people of Paluh Kurau Village is an activity that should be appreciated because it is a coordinated movement consisting of economic growth, environmental sustainability, poverty reduction, and social engagement that is driven by the development and use of global resources in a sustainable manner, without relying on the practice of depleting or destroying natural resources.

Empowering Women Groups On Mangrove Conservation In East Java Coast: Transformative Resilience To The Impacts Of Sea-Level Rise

Medan, March 2021, The presence of mangrove forests in coastal areas plays a pivotal role for nature and the Earth. Mangrove forests can function as a tool to decrease the amount of carbons in the environment as the plant is capable of absorbing large amounts of carbon, moreover mangrove can be proceed as something that can improving communities economic who living in coastal areas. Mangroves timber can be proceed as an organic coloring and mangroves fruit proceed as foods and syrups.

Transformative Resilience to The Impacts of Sea-Level Rise

Yayasan Gajah Sumatera (YAGASU) Aceh is one of the non-governmental organizations (NGO) that focuses on the planting and restoration of mangrove ecosystems, with the goal of creating environments that foster benefits for the local biodiversity, communities, and the climate. The organization also performs numerous studies designed to further protect the environment and develop local community programs in carrying out these activities.

Tuesday, 23 March 2021 Yagasu held several training activities in Kampung Blekok – Klantan Village, East Java. The theme of these activities is “Empowering Women Groups on Mangrove Conservation in East Java Coast: Transformative Resilience to The Impacts of Sea-Level Rise”. The several activities that carried out are Mangrove Awareness Activities, Mangroves Planting Activities, Mangroves Patrol Activities, and Training Activities for Organic Batik and Green Products of Mangrove. Bambang Suprayogi as CEO of Yagasu stated that Mangrove Awareness Activities were aimed for children in order to know the benefits of mangroves and do planting directly in field so the children can gain experience from planting mangroves. These activities aims to increase the awareness in children the importance of planting mangroves especially in coastal areas and to know the benefits of mangroves from education that has been given.

Planting activities with community is an activity that planting mangroves that have several benefits especially in coastal areas, such as protection for coastal communities whose areas they live are prone to natural disasters, the breed of biodiversity such as mammals, reptile and amphibi, invertebrates animal, bird, fish, shrimp, and crabs. Riza Aditya as a coordinator of these activities, hope that the collaboration of Yagasu with communities which supported by GEI and Handprint can be better in future and more involving communities in every mangrove restoration activities in East Java region.

Furthermore, Mangrove Patrol Activities which was held in Kampung Blekok – Klantan Village, East Java as a learning activities for communities on the importance of mangrove protected area so that it is not encroached by irresponsible parties. The presence of mangrove is a necessity for the ecosystem.

As an effort to improve communities skills for increasing the economy of communities, Yagasu also provides Training Activities for Organic Batik and Green Products of Mangrove as the activities that carried out to provide training activities for coastal communities to utilize non-timber for conservative economic source, hoped that through these activities the communities especially women are able to be creative in proceed products from mangrove’s organic coloring obtained from timber and green products from mangroves fruit as a promising income.

Yagasu Attending the Discussion of Draft Local Regulation in The Context of Medan Spatial Planning 2

Medan, February 2021, The existence of mangrove forests in coastal area can function as one of eco-tourism and can function as land to make a living for the surrounding community. One of mangrove eco-tourism in Medan was located in Sicanang. The existence of eco-tourism in Sicanang as a form of tourism development to improve the welfare of the community, especially those who live around the destination area.

Tuesday, 23 February 2021, Yagasu attending the invitation by The Head of Medan Parliament to survey Sicanang field, Medan Belawan to review the locations that related to the Discussion of Regional Regulation (Ranperda) Medan, regarding the amendments of Medan Regulation in context of Regional Spatial Planning in Northern City of Medan.

Meilinda Suriani Harefa, as the Program Director of Yagasu in open discussion with community leaders, sub-districts governments, Special Committee Team of Medan Parliament, and Bapeda Team of Medan, conveyed that any spatial change plan that will be carried out must consider several aspects, such as the environment, areas for mangrove forests that have right to live for sustainability, and the ecological needs of the community. The remaining mangroves in Medan are located in Sicanang.

Mangroves area has been grown and guarded by community as during high tide tidal flooding and other benefits. Topography of the area must also be considered with a thick delta so that it requires a good and sustainable spatial design as well as considering the economic activities of surrounding community groups who still depend on the life of traditional fishermen, so they need green space to make a living.

Yagasu Conducts the Planting of Mangroves and the Spreading of Vaname Shrimp Seeds

Alongside the KKP Secretary General, Yagasu Conducts the Planting of Mangroves and The Spreading of Vaname Shrimp Seeds for First Time in The East Aceh National Shrimp Farm Cluster Model

Medan, Februari 2021, East Aceh is well-known for the potential of its nature, especially in the marine and fisheries sector, due to its direct proximity to the Malacca Strait. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan, KKP) built national shrimp farm cluster models in East Aceh with consideration to the unpolluted land, a condition that makes it ideal for the development of shrimp fisheries. Adequate facilities and infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and irrigation channel further solidified the decision to construct the national shrimp farm cluster model in Aceh Timur.

Monday, December 28, 2021 Yagasu, in an event attended directly by Program Director Meilinda Suriani Harefa, alongside the Secretary General (Sekjen) of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and Commissioner General (Komjen) Mr. Antam Novambar and their entourage spread Vaname Perdana shrimp seeds and planted mangroves in the national shrimp ponds Cluster Model in East Aceh, to the tune of 1.5 hectares of mangroves being planted in the East Aceh national shrimp farm cluster. Rayeuk, East Idi district. Also attending were the Regent of East Aceh and the Chairperson of the East Aceh DPRD, the heads of the Host Government Offices in East Aceh and the Head of the Brackish Water Cultivation Fishery Center Ujung Batee M. Tahang and staff who served as committee in the implementation of this activity.

Anton Syahputra Siregar, the Yagasu Manager of Restoration, said that planting mangroves in national shrimp farm clusters is done with the aim of developing Silvofishery ponds as an alternative to maintaining mangrove forests. Mangrove plants possess root systems that protrudes from the ground, a system called breathing roots which are good for binding mud and neutralizing chemicals so that food waste from cluster ponds can be fed to the silvofishery pond. This means that the mangroves growing inside the silvofishery ponds can serve as a good filtration system for the fisheries.

Anton further explained that the mangrove ecosystem also plays an integral part in the carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles. Mangroves are also able to prevent coastal abrasion, especially when the farm cluster is positioned so closely to the beach. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), through the Directorate General of aquaculture, developed a shrimp farm cluster model in Gampong Matang Rayeuk, East Aceh regency. The model spans 5,1 hectares and will be equipped with facilities such as tendon basins, raw water distribution tanks, maintenance plots, disposal and harvesting channels, as well as a Wastewater Management Installation (Instalasi Pengelolaan Air Limbah, IPAL). It is a huge honor for Yagasu to be able to participate in this activity.
